Welcome to our July 2008 Features!
Jason Champion-Reflections
EMI Gospel
Life for Jason Champion
is no coincidence; The Cleveland, Ohio native, husband and father of two sons has spent over a decade honoring his faith and
commitment in God to illuminate his path. While the journey has included many stumbling blocks along the way, he has continued
to persevere. Utilizing his natural gift of song, Champ, as he is ironically called, prepares for a glorious victory with
his inspirational debut on Brooks Entertainment Group/ EMI Gospel entitled Reflections.
With Reflections, Champion’s
desire is to touch souls the way God has touched his life. “I hope that this message and music will affect someone,
some way, some how. The title track, co-written and produced by Gerald Haddon, Champion’s former roommate and brother
to gospel great Deitrick Haddon, is a personal testimony for Jason Champion.
Music was present in the Champion
household, primarily from Jason’s father, an elder in the church. By the 11th grade a brief encounter with Gerald Levert
led to an audition, Jason and David became the R&B group Men At Large barely out of high school. Their self titled debut
album and their sophomore recording, One Size Fits All catapulted the young adults to the stratosphere singing. In 1996, a
still small voice spoke to Champion. “God informed me gently through his Holy Spirit that I needed to do other things
and break away from Men At Large.” Coincidently, David desired to go solo and the record label wished to sever ties.
This was Champion’s confirmation that God was in his midst and he was to exercise his obedience. A chance reintroduction
with Kirk Franklin, with whom he had been acquainted during his Men At Large days, led to Champion’s contribution on
Franklin’s Hero album and tour, beginning in March 2005. While on tour with Mary Mary, Champion became acquainted with
Erica Campbell’s husband, famed producer, Warryn Campbell. When Franklin decided to downsize in February 2007, Champion
and Campbell stayed connected.
Campbell produced Champion, alongside his wife Erica who contributed vocals to
the uptempo, bouncy track “Always. Co-written with songwriter/producer/artist Eric Dawkins, the song thankfully “is
about being encouraged. Reflections also carries three other ageless tracks from that period in Champion’s life including
“Find A Reason,” “For Better or For Worse,” a duet with his wife, Paula and “He Is the Way.”
All Champion needed was a simple piano to convey his whole heart and love of Jesus Christ on “He Is the Way.”
As Jason Champion prepares for this next chapter in his life, he is continuing to be faithful and obedient to
the God he serves. I want to be known as a transparent person and somebody who went to bat for the underdogs.” It is
here and now, that Jason Champion is comfortable honoring his own reflection.

Supreme 7-Another Yes
T Records
The Supreme 7 was formed
in July of 1995 under the leadership of Antwione K. Peterson and Marcus A. Allen. Members included Demetrius Starling, Hason
Johnson, Willis Harris, Lamont Murphy, Xavier Brand, and David Moore. The Supreme 7 attributes there interest in music to
their parents and many groups that paved the way.
In 1999 the Lord took the group in a new direction. While Antwione
Peterson was playing for the Gospel Keynotes he was led to approach Corey Young and Kevin Thompson, who at the time were members
of the Fantastic Violinaires. He asked them to join him and the Supreme 7 to help them do great work for the Lord. The Supreme
7 represents the best of the past and present in gospel music. A multi-talented group that has remained steadfast.
In 2002 a young man named Stephen Walden, former musician for James Bolton of the Bolton Brothers joined the group. Once
again God ordered them in a new direction. But emphasizing every step they made, they put God first and He elevated them higher
and higher. The Lord has blessed the group recently with two more young men who are willing to
lift up the name of Jesus.
They are Justine Manning and Chris Bailey. The Supreme 7 have always kept God as the
heart and soul of their life and music. The Lord allowed the Supreme 7 to have some great times while ministering for Him.
They won numerous awards such as the American Gospel Quartet award, and the Luther Barnes Classic award. But there have been
some obstacles in their way, and they realize that there are many more to come. But through Christ, they can do all things.
The question has been asked on several occasions, why are you all called the Supreme 7 when there are normally 6 people
performing? Our response to them is God is always with us wherever we go. He saved us and united us together. And He will
always be the head of our ministry. So we feel with Him being in charge we are complete. The number 7 signifies completion,
so we believe this name would be very appropriate. The Supreme 7 high energy remains, showcasing
their songwriting skills and superb arranging as well as their vocals and striving to keep it in their future. The current
members include Mr. Antwione Peterson, Mr. Corey Young, Mr. Kevin Thompson, Mr. Steven Walden, Mr. Demetrius Starling, Mr.
Justine Manning, and Mr. Chris Bailey. We are a group of young men who ask for your prayers that we will be able to please
God, the source from which all blessings flow throughout the world. We are learning everyday when the devil tries to attack
us to “leave it in the hands of the Lord”. We know “He has all power in His hands”!

Trip Lee-20/20 Vision Cross Movement Records
Vision has many dynamics. Vision gives us the capability to see objects. It can help guide a lost man down unfamiliar
surroundings. It can even turn a blank canvas into a masterpiece. The Scriptures communicate that 'Without vision, people
perish'. Any sensible human can comprehend how vision is important. As inhabitants of earth how do we envision life? As
people, we are all responsible to see life through the proper perspective. But first we must see our Creator for who He is.
With his sophomore project 20/20, not only does Trip Lee
challenge all listeners to evaluate every area of life through the lens of Scripture, but also desires for the listener to
have a proper view of God and how they are to relate to Him. Trip set out to encourage seekers, as well children of the King,
to see God as He has revealed Himself. In Christian hip hop it is easy to merely focus on the horizontal necessities of the
faith. Trip Lee urges us not to forsake the importance of our vertical understanding and worship of Jehovah.
The
album 20/20 showcases a more diverse sound from a more mature artist. While serving at a local church and attending Bible
college in Philadelphia, Trip has been challenged, not only in his personal growth, but also in his contribution to the growth
of others. A southern swagger and love for the East Coast sound brings a unique stylistic mixture and the album satisfies
a diverse blend of musical tastes. 20/20 offers the listener everything from southern bass to live instrumentation. There
are feature guest appearances from all Reach artists (Lecrae, Tedashii, and Sho Baraka). Flame, JR, Diamone, Cam and shai
linne also lend their giftings to his sophomore project. Production credits range from Joe Prielozny (notable Amped Producer),
veterans DJ Official and Tony Stone, to promising newcomer G Styles. 20/20 provides the fan with 15 tracks of non-stop banging
exaltation.
Music can easily deceive the listener with aspirations of shallow and futile desires. But Trip's
primary goal is for the listener to fall more in love with God. Once we have an accurate view of God the Father, Christ the
Son and the Holy Spirit, then we can begin intimacy with Him. Trip Lee's prayer is that through the album listeners will
be introduced to Christ Jesus and His people will rejoice and reflect on His goodness.

The Murrills-Family Prayer
Verity/Zomba Gospel
The old familiar
adage says "A family that prays together, stays together!" The Murrills
are here as living examples and musical embodiments of that very fact.
This six-member group of siblings
knows the worth and the value of family prayer first hand. They also can attest that prayer is not only a language of love,
but it can also be a dialogue of despair. After losing their mother following a lengthy illness, The Murrills instinctively
banded together and did the only thing they knew to do... they prayed.
Brothers Darwin, Damion, Donnell,
Andre, and Durwood and sister Arnetta have been praying and singing together since they were toddlers. As is the story of
most of accomplished singers, The Murrills began singing in the church.
They traveled locally as a prodigy
group, at their father's behest, and won over each crowd before which they stood with their amazing talent that rivaled
their chronological ages. Unlike many of their contemporaries, however, The Murrills never left the church, and became seasoned
professionals at leading praise & worship services at their home church.
The Murrills were introduced
to their destiny when a gentleman named Donald Lawrence took the reigns of the local community choir, to which several of
them belonged. He immediately spotted the keen talents of the individual family members and they became fast friends. Over
the years, the friendship evolved into family, and Lawrence kept them involved and visible as he climbed the musical ladder
and became one of the most renowned, celebrated, and sought-after artist/producers of our time. When Donald Lawrence formed
his own label imprint, Quiet Water Entertainment, The Murrills were among the first acts he signed.
Family
Prayer is a collection of songs that speaks to the very value and wealth in the sacred, corporate activity. The CD speaks
to the joys and pains of a faithful walk, providing the soundtrack for the former and essential tools for the latter. Donald
Lawrence is at the reigns of the entire CD, serving as Executive Producer, and has personally overseen the concept and direction
herein.

Tye Tribbett & GA-Stand Out
Columbia Records
Columbia Records
will release StandOUT, the much anticipated new album
from the contemporary gospel singer, songwriter, and performer Tye Tribbett
and his gospel choir and musical ensemble, G.A. (Greater Anointing),
on Tuesday, May 6. StandOUT is the first new full-length album from Tye
Tribbett and G.A. since the groundbreaking gospel artist's Victory Live!
entered the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart at #1, shortly following its release in May 2006. A DVD edition of Victory Live! has sold more than 40,000 copies. A crossover success featuring the #1 Gospel
Radio single, "Victory," Victory Live! hit #64 on the Billboard
Top 200 best-selling albums chart while earning Tribbett two Stellar Awards and three Grammy nominations -- Best Gospel Performance
("Victory"); Best Gospel Song ("Victory"); and Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album.
Recorded live at Rock
Church International in Virginia Beach on August 17, 2007, StandOUT premieres
a group of new musical testimonies to the Power of the Word and the Glory of the Holy Spirit, each written or co-written by
Tye Tribbett: "Stand Out," "Hold On," "Look Up," "I Need You," "Prodigal Son,"
"All Hail The King," "Hallelujah," "Let Us Worship," "So Amazing," "He Has Made
Me Glad," "I Made It Through," "Chasing After You," and "Well Done." As an added blessing
for Tribbett fans, StandOUT includes the hidden bonus track, the single
"Good In The Hood."
Tye Tribbett, a co-host, along with Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary, at the 22nd Annual Stellar Awards ceremony, and
G.A. have performed with a variety of pop and gospel superstars ranging from Justin Timberlake and Faith Hill to Mary J. Blige,
Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell and Israel Houghton.
Tye Tribbett sponsored his second annual youth conference
earlier this year in the Poconos, with more than 1,000 attending. He will be performing at this year's Essence Festival
in New Orleans.
Born in Camden, New Jersey, Tye Tribbett is the son of two preachers…both his mother and father wore
the cloth…and Tye himself, a loving husband and father of two daughters, has responded to the Call, going on to minister
through his music and the Living Word. Growing up surrounded by hymns and gospel music, Tye learned to make music at an early
age. "I've been playing all my life," he explains. "Before I knew my ABC's, I knew the ABC's on
the keys." As a teenager, he honed his skills as a keyboardist by accompanying such regional notables as Steve Middleton,
the late James Viner and the Tri-State Mass Choir of the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar.
In 1996, Tye founded
a gospel choir, Greater Anointing (G.A.), consisting of a group of family and friends whose hearts were set simply on praising
the Creator through the gift of great music. Tye knew from the beginning they'd tapped into something real and glorious.
"That first rehearsal blew my mind," he says. "The musicianship, the quality of the voices and the spirit of
the choir, the character of everybody…I knew that this was it. I knew that this is what I was supposed to be doing."

Christopher Lewis is a man of the people, with a deep seared passion and heart after
God. Lewis is no stranger to the industry, with eyes toward the sky and the spirit of a born worshipper. He and his untiring
team at Frontline Entertainment Inc., are adrenalized by their most recent partnership with Indianapolis-based, Tyscot Records,
the nation's oldest running Gospel independent label -- all this, in conjunction with the impending release of Lewis'
5th project entitled "Crisis".
Crisis, embodies
Lewis' signature style of exuberant praise combined with elements of R& B, Rock, Hip Hop, Contemporary Gospel, Urban
& Neo-soul, Rap, and Traditional Gospel, all resulting in "a cutting-leading-edge style of worship". This project
also offers up an impassioned vocal performance guaranteed to evoke adoration and reverence across all age groups, nationalities,
cultural barriers and denominations. Lewis says, Crisis... is all about transition, designed to shift the mindset from a state
of impasse to a state of great expectation and ultimately birth you into your destined place of promised manifestation. There
is something for everyone who has ever been through something and this is just one of the many messages that “Crisis”
communicates.
I am honored that God allows me to be a living testament to the fact that no matter what you go
through, or what life throws your way, you can make it. I am reminded that the things of this word are temporal… you
can and you will survive any crisis, that comes… you will conquer every stumbling block that presents itself,
and nothing will keep you from God’s pre-ordained destiny. Crisis not only inspires human morality, it embraces the
intimate relationship we have with our “Father”, establishes our identity in him, and shows us how God continues
to reach beyond our faults to meet our needs."
Opening as an edgy, in your face expression of praise and
worship, this project confronts real life issues that go beyond the four walls of the sanctuary. Crisis goes from a whisper
to a roar; a spine-tingling witness to God's greatness that falls nothing short of majestic – while making a soulful
impact. Standouts on this project include the rousing ,“How Does It Feel”, "Man Inside Of Me" and "Show
Me The Way" – featuring the award winning, Bishop Paul S. Morton Sr. From start to finish, the 22-track soul winning,
double-disc, showcases the multi-genre, strong songwriting, producing, unrelentingly soaring vocals and true anointing of
Christopher Lewis.
Lewis grew up immersed in church music. Born around 1971 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. His
father, Johnny Lewis, was a Deacon in the Central Heights, Free Will Baptist Church and sang in a local quartet while his
mother; Ella Lewis was a lead singer in the church choir. Lewis is the youngest of the three children and while Gospel music
was the preferred choice at home other sounds managed to make their way into Christopher’s hearing to include the likes
of James Taylor, The Beatles, Billie Holiday and Sam Cooke along with gospel giants like Shirley Ceasar, Andre Crouch and
The Hawkins Singers all were instrumental influences. Christopher is an ordained minister who accepted his calling into ministry
at age 7. At age 8, he composed his first song appropriately entitling it “Jesus Is Calling” . By the time he
was in the tenth grade, he had composed several songs including one that is now know around the world, “Sing Praises
To Thee,” recorded by gospel artist Judith Christie-McAllister, and sung by choirs everywhere.
His passionate
praise and worship sound continues to be celebrated across the globe from the USA to the UK to Japan. Lewis continues to garner
local and global recognition alongside numerous award nominations to include being named “Georgia Music Industry Songwriter
of the Year and Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) Songwriter of the Year in 2002. He has performed with some of the country’s
most well known artists to include Kirk Franklin, Trinity 5-7, Daryl Coley, Donnie McClurkin, Darlene McCoy, Ron Winans and
Tremaine Hawkins and a host of others.
Earlier this year, Lewis hit the road on a 10-city UK tour making appearances
in Northampton, Manchester, Reading, Liverpool and London, in support of his award winning and "Most Distinguished Album",
released in 2002, -- “Life”, and his other projects Rhythm & Praise, Honest Heart and his Gospel Worship DVD
“Plugged In”, a live recording of refreshing acoustic songs of worship, currently aired on BET Video Gospel. His
signature style and charisma was seen as an undeniable showstopper and in a matter of months this dynamism has promoters bringing
Christopher to Japan and back to the United Kingdom (UK) again in October 2007.
Christopher is the CEO of Frontline
Entertainment Inc., an independent record label and JonEboi (pronounced Johnnyboy) Music, a publishing company. Currently
residing in Atlanta, GA, Lewis is the proud father of four beautiful children, Brian, Christopher, Lauren and Alex.Teaming
up with his wife Leslie,by his side, there is nothing but success and determination in tote. Lewis and his "FRONTLINE

Ashmont Hill-Self Titled
Axiom Records
The Thompson family, steeped in rich musical tradition and hailing from the
idyllic Ashmont Hill community near Boston, has made beautiful,
spiritual music for years in Jubilee church - the church in which their father is Bishop. Phil Thompson, Sisters April Joy
Thompson and Deborah Bullock, along with Deborah’s husband, Will Bullock, have set out as in Psalm 69:30, to “…praise
God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving.”
The group’s new self-titled album has
an equal number of songs to God and songs to inspire the people, and was crafted as a true collaborative effort between the
band and their producer, Sal Oliveri (Calvin Noel). They covered two Matt Redman songs, “Gifted Response” and
“Blessed Be Your Name,” for the record. Calvin Nowell wrote two tracks “I Give You Worship” and “Song
of Glory” for Ashmont Hill and the debut single, “You Proved Your Love,” was written by Oliveri. Phil Thompson
wrote the bulk of the album.
Ashmont Hill’s songs are pop worship music with a warmth and sincerity that

Cece Winans-Thy Kingdom Come
Pure Springs Gospel
. Seven-time GRAMMY® winner CeCe Winans is set to once again share with the world her passion, praise-and-worship with her long-awaited
eighth career album, Thy Kingdom Come, due April 1 on Winans’ own PureSprings Gospel label.

Room.
"It’s great to sing songs that help us or that encourage us to live right, or to talk right,
or to love each other—and those are all powerful messages, things that God smiles upon," Winans said. "But
when you just talk about the power of the living God and His awesomeness and His holiness, nothing is more powerful than that.
It penetrates the heart more than anything."
The first single "Waging War" was serviced to radio

take you to a place that true worshippers love to dwell. To beat the crowd, avoid standing in lines and keep up with CeCe’s

Angella Christie-The Breath of Life
ACSM Records
What would
make a young girl think that she could take a sax with the audacious determination to travel the world playing gospel? Didn’t
she consider that many would say her dream was too ambitious, impractical or unlady like? Didn’t she consider that the
world and many church folks would categorical label her a jazz musician in spite her evangelistic exploits and self proclaimed
identity of being an “instrumental gospel saxophonist”? Didn’t she consider it’s a mannnnnn’s
world!
Nawwww, of course not!…She concluded, “The
earth is the Lord’s the fullness thereof and all they that dwell therein,” and went for IT!
Despite the odds, Angella has and is fulfilling the vision
of her youth. For the past 21 years she has literally performed throughout the United States and other continents such as Africa, Europe and Asia. By means of television (Day Star, TBN, BET, The Word Network and others), she has performed before
over 238 nations. She has encouraged many souls and brought many into the Kingdom.
Angella was featured in Jet magazine with “Best Photo
of the Week” with former President Bill Clinton and also headlined on the 40-city “Sister’s in the Spirit”
tour along with Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, and Shirley Caesar. As a three-time Stellar Award Nominee, she is the first female
internationally acclaimed gospel saxophonist in the world.
Affectionately known as “the girl that plays with
her shoes off,” she is unequivocally Gospel’s Premiere Saxophonist!
While recording THE
BREATH OF LIFE, Angélla
Christie continued
to minister around the country as well as obtain her Certificate of Completion from The School of Ministry via Kingdom University (Atlanta,
GA) to add to her BA in Music and Bachelor of Social Work both obtained from Houston Baptist University
(Houston,TX). Now this three-time
Stellar Award nominee presents her greatly anticipated new release! Angélla Christie is an incredible “Smooth Gospel” instrumentalist. Her
new masterpiece will encourage, inspire and bless all during each and every listen. One can literally feel the Spirit of the
Lord hovering in the atmosphere on each note. Along with original compositions THE BREATH OF LIFE features several popular
cover tunes such as Because of Who You Are,Total Praise, Like the Dew, I Need You Now and others. A greater depth is felt on this new project; however Christie
stays true to the soulful style and passion that has dubbed her “Gospel’s Premiere Saxophonist!”

James Fortune & FIYA-The Transformation
Worldwide Gospel/Blacksmoke
"Youth of today must realize that true happiness and fullness
of joy is only found in the presence of Yahweh, our Heavenly Father" believes James Fortune. In April 1998, God gave
Fortune the vision to start a youth ministry to focus on reaching youth through song and dance. Youth For Christ (known
as "YFC") ministered throughout Greater Houston, Texas at churches, workshops, youth events and conferences. James Fortune
and YFC's ministry touched thousands of youth and garnered statewide attention for their high-energy unorthodox anointed performances. Youth
realized it was acceptable to sing and dance while praising God.
Two years later, Yahweh led Fortune to change the group's
name to James Fortune and FIYA (Free in Yahweh's Abundance). The vision of James Fortune and FIYA is to allow all people
through God's grace to experience the freedom that comes with a relationship with Jesus Christ. "Not by might nor power but
by God's Spirit" we believe that everyone can live a life free from bondage and strongholds and live a life in God's abundance
according to John 10:10.
"Our Father's will is not for his children to live a defeated
and broken life full of uncertainty and anxiety," says Fortune. "Yahweh has promised us that blessings would overtake
us if we would fully obey His Word!"
James Fortune & FIYA released their debut CD in 2005
entitled "You Survived!" The single, "You Survived" gained national attention and soared as high as #2 on Radio and Records
and #5 on Billboard's Radio Charts. The chart topping single was also listed as the #7 most played Gospel Song for the
year of 2005.
In June of 2006, at the 19th Annual Rhythm & Soul Music
Awards, ASCAP honored James Fortune as a songwriter for the most performed gospel song with the ASCAP Award for Gospel Song
of the Year for the hit single "You Survived!"
James Fortune and FIYA has been blessed to share the stage
with Grammy award winning and national recording artists such as Kirk Franklin, Prophetess Juanita Bynum, Israel, Yolanda
Adams, Tye Tribbett, John P. Kee, Kim Burrell, Mary Mary, Stevie Wonder, and many others. The group has also appeared
on national television and radio shows such as Bobby Jones Gospel, The Jeff Majors Show, TBN and the Gospel Superfest. In
2006, Fortune attended the One Church Tour where he shared the platform with Kurt Carr, Vicki Yohe, RIZEN and Smokie Norful. Recently,
the group performed on the Cathy Hughes Radio One Love Cruise which featured Fred Hammond, Deitrick Haddon, The Williams Brothers,
Dottie Peoples, and many more.
James Fortune and FIYA's purpose is to reach young people
and address the struggles of peer pressure, drugs, fornication, dance clubs and all other acts of ungodliness. This group
possesses a very special anointing that immediately pours in the presence of Yahweh and excites you about living for Christ. Their
desire and focus is that lost souls can come to know Christ and experience the unconditional love and peace that he so freely
gives. Just allow the words of their hit single, "You Survived" to minister to you, "After all that you've been through, now
you know God carried you through the rain and the pain, you called and he came, YOU SURVIVED!"
James Fortune and FIYA's highly anticipated sophomore album,
The Transformation, is scheduled for release in the 1st Quarter of 2008. The first single, The Blood, which is a tribute
to gospel great Andre Crouch, was the number one added gospel song to the national airplay list in April of 2007 and peaked
at #14 on the gospel radio charts.

Daquela-Blue Sky
EMI Gospel
“What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun…….or does it
explode?” For Gospel newcomer, Da’Quela, her dream of becoming the next great Gospel artist took more of a “big
bang” turn in a direction she had, oddly enough, almost given up on. EMI Gospel, the label known for nurturing some
of the industry’s most amazing talent from career infancy to stardom, brings Da’Quela to center stage with her
debut release entitled Blue Sky.
Blue Sky is God’s big answer to what happens to Da’Quela’s seemingly
deferred dream. As she lifts her voice, Da’Quela emits a vocal collage that whisks you into the presence of Ce Ce Winans,
Yolanda Adams, and Mary J. Blige all at once. “Blue Sky”, the first single and title track from her debut project,
speaks of a love for God that gently elevates the vocalist to a place where she can seemingly touch the sky. Subtle strings
grace the track, appearing as a heavenly orchestra waiting to greet and accompany the voice of an angel.
Da’Quela
was your average girl next door. She carried a dream in her heart and a deadline for realizing that dream in her head, and
the clock was ticking rapidly. Born and raised in Beloit, Wisconsin, population
37,000, she has memories of singing at the age of 2, when she wrapped her toddler fingers around her hairbrush microphone
and performed around the house with her older brother. Fast forward a few years, and picture the life of a young adult, adjusting
to the reality and challenges of managing life as a single mom. Da’Quela felt the possibility of her dream morphing
into reality becoming fainter by the day. Perched on the front steps of her home, one day Da’Quela decided to stretch
her faith and present God with a challenge. “If I’m not signed (to a label), recording an album, or something
by [age] 25, I’m gonna quit,” she said. She thought, “Maybe I could get used to just singing at church.”
After trying out for both American Idol and Exalting Him, in 2006, Da’Quela sang her way past 16,000 contestants
to win the first ever, Trinity Broadcasting Network’s (TBN) Gifted television competition, an American Idol look-alike,
showcasing the talent of Christian vocalists nationwide. Immediately, the Gifted judges took note. The accolades from competition
judges – industry veterans such as Eddie DeGarmo and Andrae Crouch – came in rapid succession during Da’Quela’s
performances, as they observed her personality, her style, and her amazing ability to master any note and any song placed
in front of her. At one point in the competition DeGarmo remarked, “……You have a special gift, and whether
or not you win this competition….., you should be making cd’s so we can all enjoy it.” The other judges
agreed, and Da’Quela pulled out of the competition the winner and proved that there is, in fact, a stage with her name
on it in the music industry.
With total confidence, Da’Quela delivers to the world the dream she’s been
waiting so long to share. She holds her own against Gospel powerhouse, Darwin Hobbs, who makes a special guest appearance,
lending his distinctly rich and powerful vocal gift to a duet on the track “Never Too Far”. Together, the two
voices intertwine in a melodious reminder that “no mountain is high enough, no valley is low enough” to separate
us from the love of God.
Da’Quela displays her versatility, delivering up tempo tracks like “So Happy”,
“I Got You”, and “U Gonna Make It” with unquestionable vocal control and power. She seamlessly delves
deep to usher you into the presence of God’s glory on the soul stirring, worshipful love song, “Incredible”.
Her passionate conveyance of “It’s Love”, one of the more personal songs on the Blue Sky project, takes
you to the depths of her life and her heart. Listen closely, and you will hear snippets of Da’Quela’s personal
testimony sprinkled throughout the song as she wraps herself in the forgiving and endless love of God.
“Shining
Star”, co-written by Antonio Neal, Kyle Lovett, and label-mate Darlene McCoy, is understandably Da’Quela’s
favorite song on the project. This sweet serenade dares you to close your eyes and float on a wave of smooth jazz and R&B
sounds as Da’Quela’s lead vocals invite the listener to reflect on the all sufficient and gratifying character
of the Lord. Likewise “Psalm 23”, a kindred companion, successfully breathes new life into a familiar, comforting
verse of scripture.
In her first time ever in a studio, this nouveau artist was placed in the more than capable hands
of industry pros like Antonio Neal, DoubleDutch (Josiah Bell and Robert Marvin), and Cedric Thompson. The evidence is lucid,
and selecting a favorite from Blue Sky will prove to be a laborious task and one that will quickly be abandoned at first spin
of the project. Inspirational lyrics overlay tracks full of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, pop, and even disco influences.
Blue Sky promises a collection of sounds capable of pacifying the ears of the most discriminating listener. For Da’Quela,
however, her “dream deferred” has now become a dream revealed.

Professor James Roberson-Joy Unspeakable
JDI Records
In today's competitive climate many startup labels don't
make it past the first few rough years, so a 10th anniversary is definitely cause for celebration.
As JDI Records hits the 10-year bench-mark, founder James Roberson is proud of the label's past but is keeping his focus on the roster's
future. And after a decade behind the scenes, he steps into the spotlight with his own debut album, "Joy Unspeakable," out
January .
"I started the label with just $7 in my bank account,"
Roberson says of the early days. "Our first record was Norman Hutchins' 'Battlefield,' which took off for us and became a
big seller. It sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and from that time on, it's been a real blessed journey."
Roberson started the label after earning hs master's degree
in business administration at the University of California, Los Angeles and working at Capitol Records. Though his future looked bright at Capitol, he
says he felt God calling him to start his own venture, a move encouraged by his pastor. "I told my pastor I was having a hard
time finding basic church music," says Roberson, who has also been a music professor at UCLA for the past 13 years. "He said,
"Why don't you do something about it? Why don't you start a gospel label that focuses on providing music that is suitable
for church?"
So Roberson launched JDI, which stands for "Just Do It."
He started with Hutchins, who remains the Los Angeles-based label's flagship act. His most recent release, "Where I Long to
Be," debuted at No. 12 on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart. The JDI roster also includes DeNetria Champ, Chester T. Baldwin,
Minister Timothy Britten, Paster Woodrow Hayden and the UCLA Gospel Choir.
JDI artists have ranked among Billboard's top-selling independent
gospel acts. The label is distributed to Christian retail via a long-standing relationship with Nashville-based Central South
Distribution and to mainstream retail by Sony Red.
Roberson's advice to others looking to start an indie label
is to be prepared and be willing to reinvest. "I'm glad I took time to go back to school and get my MBA," he says. "I've always
been a creative person and the music part has always been easy for me... but I needed to learn marketing, promotion, how to
do financials, strategic planning, things like that."
He says his pastor also gave him good advice: "'Don't eat
your seeds.' When you make money, you have to replant it into the ground for a har | |
